Fred Tomasello Jr. served three years as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He earned two Purple Hearts, five Air Medals and a heavy dose of Post Traumatic Stress. He was an Infantry Platoon Commander and Aerial Observer in Vietnam and a Casualty Assistance Officer in Jacksonville FL for 15 months.
Born and raised in Tampa, FL, Fred graduated from the University of South Florida and worked 27 years at the Tampa Postal Service. Retired, he now lives in Zephyrhills, FL where he writes about issues affecting veterans.
"Whoever calls Fred Tomasello's Walking Wounded a book about Vietnam is sadly mistaken. This memoir, told with admirable immediacy in the present tense, recounts not only the author's journey to manhood through service in the U.S. Marines but also his recognition of the futility of war. Simultaneously gut-wrenching, funny, infuriating, and philosophical, Walking Wounded pulls no punches in detailing both the obvious and visceral horrors of war and the subtle impact of waging war on the psyche of the individual warrior. Fred writes with power and undeniable authority in the recognizable voice of a thoughtful man. He says what needs to be said, and we are all better for listening to him. This is splendid work."
