The peninsula beyond the Moray Frith was for long afterwards in the hands of the Horsemen, who acknowledged their allegiance to the Kings of Scot land only when it suited them to resist the more distant authority of the crown of Norway, or when divisions among themselves rendered it impos sible to assert an absolute independence.
