It’s that moment every parent dreads: single-mother Kat Kinkaid learns her only son, Ethan, is missing—vanished from the cabin where he’d been on an overnight field trip with his second-grade class. Shocked and distraught, Kat rushes to the scene but she’s too late; her son’s tracks have dried up at a road. The police investigation soon centers around Kat’s abusive ex-husband, until another mother receives a mysterious call demanding ransom for her son—a little boy who is safe and accounted for. Stefanie Huntington is everything Kat is not—wealthy, glamorous, and married to one of Atlanta’s most powerful political players, a man whose high-powered job has left her lonely much of the time. Sam has made plenty of enemies in his tenure as Atlanta mayor, especially now that he’s up for reelection. But as the investigation focuses in on the first family, their carefully constructed veneer begins to melt under the glare. As hours and then days pass with no word from the kidnapper, both mothers will discover that the greatest danger lies not in the threat of an anonymous stranger, but behind the everyday smiles of those they trust the most.
