Excerpt from The Works of Sallust: Translated Into English, With Political Discourses Upon That Author; To Which Is Added, a Translation of Cicero's Four Orations Against Catiline His Language, upon the Whole, is plealing and pathetic, his Narration natural, his Speeches firong and perfuafive, his Defcrip tions exact and beautiful, the Reflections curious and poignant, the Characters firiking and infl; his own, that of a noble and infiru tive Hiiiorian, a great \vriter, not without great Faults in his Writings; I do nor mean only his Flattery and Partiality to Czofor 3 his Prejudices to Cicero are apparent and unpardonable. He fpeaks very fparingly of that great Man, by Right the Hero of his Hiliory: He treats him with the Contempt of a few civil Epithets, and fays of him iuli what he muii fay, in order to ex plain the Progrefs and Mine of the Confpiraey. Though he is apt to go out of his Way, in order to difplay his own lively Talents in drawing Chara 'cers, he exercifes none of them upon that of Cicero, where there was fuch a loud Call for it, fo much Scope for the mofi brilliant Colours, and fuch a Crime in omitting them.
