In this lively one-act farce, Thackeray sets his stage in the genteel household of the widowed Mrs. Prior, whose precarious financial state is a source of humor and intrigue. Mrs. Prior struggles to maintain appearances while supporting her family through genteel poverty, including her daughter Elizabeth, who serves as the governess for the wealthy and eccentric Lord and Lady Griffin.Elizabeth, the "lamb," is virtuous and innocent, standing in stark contrast to the manipulative and greedy "wolves" of society, represented by characters like Captain Clarence, a suitor with ulterior motives. Through witty dialogue and sharp caricatures, Thackeray explores themes of hypocrisy, ambition, and morality. Elizabeth’s sincerity ultimately triumphs, gaining the respect and favor of Lord Griffin.
