From the beloved author of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series comes a dazzling and uplifting novel of chance encounters and new beginnings. Not long after starting a new research position in Edinburgh, Dr. Neil Anderson meets a bright, ambitious, and deeply charming junior colleague at the institute. The relationship quickly becomes serious, and the two move into a beautiful flat on the south side of the city. Everything seems to be falling into place for Neil until a student misconstrues a comment he makes during a lecture, landing him in hot water with his superiors. Not long after, a troubling secret about his relationship comes to light. Feeling as though his life is unraveling, Neil moves to the idyllic and remote Isle of Mull off the west coast of Scotland to mend his broken heart. Far from the intensity of the city, Neil embraces a quieter existence, forming new friendships and even entertaining the possibility of a budding romance. But the past has a funny way of reemerging, and Neil is once more faced with a difficult decision about his future. With the familiar warmth and gentle humor only Alexander McCall Smith can bring to the page, The Winds from Further West is a heartwarming tale full of endless possibility and a celebration of the small and seemingly insignificant events that can change the course of our lives forever.
