A gentle dilemma spirals into a national scandal when the wardenship of Hiram's Hospital is attacked by reformers as a symbol of church greed. Mr. Harding, a man who loves music and peace above all else, finds himself the unwilling center of a media storm that questions his moral right to his income. The story delicately balances the arguments for institutional reform against the personal toll such battles take on innocent individuals. It is a quiet, insightful character study about conscience, public opinion, and the pain of being misunderstood.
