The story follows a stuffed rabbit, given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, who longs to become "real." In the nursery, the Velveteen Rabbit learns from an older toy, the Skin Horse, that realness comes from being deeply loved, even if it means becoming worn and shabby in the process. Over time, the boy grows fond of the Velveteen Rabbit, taking him on adventures and confiding in him, making the toy feel more alive. When the boy falls ill with scarlet fever, all his toys, including the Velveteen Rabbit, must be destroyed to prevent infection. Heartbroken, the rabbit is discarded, but a magical fairy appears and grants him the gift of realness. Transformed into a living rabbit, he joins others in the wild, completing his journey from a toy to something truly alive.
