The story follows a man named Graham, who falls into a deep sleep in the late 19th century due to a form of catalepsy. He awakens over two centuries later, finding himself in a drastically transformed world. In this future society, he discovers that his inheritance has grown to immense wealth and influence, reshaping the world in his name. However, he also finds a dystopian society ruled by a small group of oppressive elites, and he becomes a figurehead for the oppressed masses seeking freedom from tyranny."The Sleeper Awakes" explores themes of power, social control, and the consequences of unchecked authority. Wells uses this work to comment on societal and political structures of his time, reflecting on class struggle, the dangers of concentrated power, and the impact of technological advancements on society. As with much of Wells' science fiction, "The Sleeper Awakes" remains a significant work in the genre, addressing social issues while presenting a compelling and imaginative narrative.
