Coincidentally, it seems Mary's father had a friend from his regiment named Major Sholto who had died at near the same time Mary began receiving her annual pearl. Together, Holmes, Watson, and Mary set off to meet the anonymous sender of the pearls, and thus begins the second mystery in the Sherlock literary canon. The Hound of the Baskervilles: In the moors of Devon, Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead of an apparent heart attack. But with a horror-stricken look frozen on his face and fresh footprints of none other than a legendary giant dog found nearby, Dr. James Mortimer believes misconduct played a role in his friend's untimely death and Mortimer solicits the help of Sherlock Holmes to get to the bottom of this curious case.
