Jamestown and Plymouth both started as collectivist societies. Out of desperation, out of a desire to survive, they switched to individualism and American capitalism and self-reliance was born. When the United States won their independence, the new nation embraced what had begun in Jamestown and Plymouth. The American miracle happened, and the United States became the hope for the world; the shining city on the hill. Today the shining city on the hill is dimming.
