William Preston Stapp was one of the prisoners who were captured by the Mexicans at Mier in 1842 and later released from Perote in 1844. In this journal, he recounts his experiences as a captive in Mexico, describing the living conditions, the relationships among the prisoners, and the various attempts to escape.
