Step into a world where incense mingles with steam and the sacred mechanics of devotion are rendered in brass and punched paper. Sebastiano Conti-Valerio's *The Papal Clockwork: Vatican Steampunk Chronicles* is a bold and brilliantly original collection of seven interconnected tales set in an alternate Eternal City, where the Church's ancient rituals meet the relentless ingenuity of a steampunk age. At the heart of the collection stands the Vatican itself — reimagined as a place of towering brass automata, pneumatic message systems, and gas-lit corridors humming with mechanical purpose. Yet beneath the gleaming surfaces of this clockwork Rome, the oldest human tensions endure: faith and doubt, loyalty and betrayal, the sacred and the profane. Conti-Valerio writes with rare assurance, weaving intricate theological questions into breathtaking mechanical detail, never allowing spectacle to overwhelm the deeply human stories at the collection's core. Each tale stands alone as a gripping narrative, yet together they form a rich and layered portrait of an institution balancing divine mission against earthly power. From a master craftsman who discovers that the confessional machine he built may have shattered the seal of the confessional, to engineers, priests, and penitents caught in conspiracies that stretch from Florentine palaces to the foundations of the Apostolic Palace itself, every story pulses with moral urgency and meticulous atmosphere. What makes this collection truly exceptional is its precision. Conti-Valerio renders his mechanical world with the care of a watchmaker — gears, encoding drums, phosphor-bronze membranes — yet never loses sight of the spiritual stakes involved.
