The book traces the origins of the Escuela Moderna (Modern School), established in Barcelona in 1901. Ferrer critiques the traditional education system, which he viewed as a tool for social and religious conformity. Instead, he advocates for a secular, coeducational approach that prioritizes critical thinking, personal freedom, and a curriculum rooted in science and rationality rather than dogma.Ferrer emphasizes the role of education in empowering individuals and dismantling oppressive social structures. His ideals inspired similar Modern Schools worldwide, despite his controversial execution in 1909 for alleged involvement in political unrest.
