“Full of true-to-life conflict, passion and guilt – highly recommended.” – Readers’ Favorite.
Two returning soldiers. One waiting wife. An impossible choice.
England 1944 . As young wife Rachel Lock waits impatiently for news, two wounded men return from the battlefields of Europe.
But when husband Danny comes home to her at last, Rachel Lock is devastated to find he has changed beyond all recognition: disabled and embittered, he will never lead a normal life again. Though she does her best to revive a love she once thought would last forever, he refuses to speak of what made him this way, and she struggles to understand the man he has become.
Then Captain Andrews arrives at their door, and his wry humour and sensitivity awaken in Rachel forbidden hopes for a different future. But the tension between the two men seems to stem from an earlier time. What happened in Italy to make Danny so hostile to a man he once trusted and admired? And why has Andrews come to visit him in the face of it?
Caught in the bitter conflict between her sense of duty to her ailing husband and the desire to be with the man she loves, Rachel must make an impossible choice. But as old loyalties fracture and buried truths come slowly to light, she begins to wonder if her husband is the only one keeping secrets and whether her trust in Andrews is built on a lie.
Set in the final years of the World War II, THE OFFICER'S AFFAIR is a heart-wrenching novel of love, loyalty, and sacrifice in a war-torn world. For fans of Deborah Swift, Kate Atkinson, and Sebastian Faulks.
