Louie returns to Longstock only to find himself alone as Sarah has gone away to school. The number of people has decreased to only a few. After spending much of the next winter alone and wasn't until spring that people begin to move in and it develops into community again. Living in the Canadian bush has its many difficulties including the weather and getting the river froze up in order to build the ice bridge. Louie gets married to Krista and attacked by a bear on their honey moon but survives. Logging is a way to make some money and Louie turns to that. After a couple of years, the economy collapses and the logging stopped but Louie, who at that time had a plan to build a community hall. Through many trail and tubulations the community hall idea is realized. Though everything had to he produced in Longstock or brought across the river in boats. The entire building was built by hand including the massive two and a half ton beam, that was cut and put up by hand. Louie and BJ go on a road trip to Alaska, driving the Alaska highway when it was little more than a goat trail. After getting turned back at the Alaska border and after much thought and a couple of beers we decided to take a chance and walk across the border. Living in the northern bush has many interesting experiences, including partying with the neighbors, dealing with the weather and the ice on the river, doing the census, encountering bears, gardening, riding horses, haying, fishing, etc. The beginning of the process to bring a road in begins and though the electricity came first and several years later came the road which transformed the community, changing it completely.
