The Little Colonel is a heartwarming children's novel written by Annie Fellows Johnston. The story follows the life of a young girl named Lloyd Sherman, who is known as the Little Colonel due to her commanding personality. Lloyd comes from a wealthy family and lives in the South with her parents. She is a spunky and independent girl who enjoys spending time with her friends and family. However, her life takes a turn when her father loses his fortune and they are forced to move to her mother's hometown in Kentucky. Despite the challenges that come with their new life, Lloyd remains determined to make the best of the situation. She befriends her African American neighbors and learns valuable lessons about acceptance and kindness. Along the way, she also discovers a family secret that changes her perspective on her own family history. The Little Colonel is a heartwarming story about friendship, family, and resilience. It is a beloved classic that has been enjoyed by generations of readers.1895. Annie Fellows Johnston was a celebrated author of children's and juvenile fiction. She is best known for the Little Colonel series, a semi- biographical opus of 13 novels dealing with the aristocracy of old Kentucky, particularly the story of a young girl, who came to be known as the little Colonel because of her bully mannerisms at the age of 5 which seemed to echo the military traits of her grandfather, a former confederate colonel. Johnston planned to complete the series several times, once after The Little Colonel's House Party, again after The Little Colonel's Knight Comes Riding. Always, public demand compelled Johnston to continue. The last work of the series, The Little Colonel Stories, Part 2, was published only a few months before her passing. In 1935, Twentieth Century Fox immortalized The Little Colonel, by making it into a film starring Shirley Temple in the role of the Little Colonel.
