In this second edition, the stories I have added to the originals are stories that are gleaned mostly from my memory, as few early records survive. They are presented in a rough chronological order. But in a small town mixed veterinary practice in the 1970s and 1980s, there was little control in what came through the door. And to some degree, these memoirs try to reflect that chaos. The Last Cow in the Chute is the first book in my Memoirs of a Country Vet series and are snapshots in my life. Dr. David Larsen grew up on a farm in the Coquille River Valley of Southwestern Oregon. Animals and their care have been a part of life from the very beginning. Veterinary medicine was always on his radar, but it took four years in the Army to provide the maturity for him to complete his education. First graduating from Oregon State University with a degree in zoology, he then attended Colorado State University, receiving a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1975 at the age of thirty. With a growing family, he moved first to Enumclaw, Washington, where he practiced for a year and a half. Then he moved to Sweet Home, Oregon, where he started Sweet Home Veterinary Clinic. He was in practice for over forty years. Today he spends his time with his family, writing, and doing a little fishing. He and Sandy travel when they can. There is much yet to see in Oregon and the rest of this country.
