The story is set in the picturesque landscape of the Austrian Alps, in the valley of the Golden River. The valley is inhabited by the cruel and miserly Black Brothers: Schwartz, Hans, and Gluck. They are known for their greed and mistreatment of others, particularly the poor and downtrodden. One day, a mysterious visitor arrives at the Black Brothers' door seeking shelter from a storm. Despite their wealth, the brothers refuse to offer any assistance, even as the visitor reveals himself to be a supernatural being in disguise. In retribution for their heartlessness, the visitor curses the Black Brothers and their valley, turning the river into gold and condemning them to eternal poverty and misery unless they can undo their wrongs. The only way to break the curse is for one of the brothers to perform a selfless act of kindness and sacrifice. Gluck, the youngest and most innocent of the brothers, sets out on a journey to find the elusive Golden River and seek the help of its guardian, the King of the Golden River. As Gluck embarks on his quest, he encounters various challenges and obstacles, including treacherous terrain, malevolent spirits, and his own inner demons. Along the way, he learns valuable lessons about generosity, compassion, and the true nature of wealth.
