Detective Lieutenant Bill Bennett of the New Haven Police Department and FBI Special Agent Dana Nelson knew each other during their university years, when they shared classes in law and criminology, and played on the varsity golf team. They lost touch for many years while Nelson served as legal attaché or ‘legat’, at the US embassy in London. Following a tragic personal event, Nelson returned to Washington before being assigned as Special Agent-in-charge of the New Haven field office.
A series of murders connected to the FairHaven Country Club prompted an appeal for help from Bennett. A past-president at FairHaven, and a club member since his youth, Bennett assigned detectives Manuel Rodriguez and Lucille Williams to investigate the murder of FairHaven member Murray Smith, a real estate developer, whose offshore source of investment capital suggested money laundering. The two related murders of the club’s assistant general manager, Tony Russo, and SUNY, New York student, Oksana Melnyk, prompted Bennett’s call for help from the FBI. Further investigation revealed the laundering of Eastern European dirty money backed by assassins-for-hire, Irina Volkov and Dmitri Kulik, who were suspects in the executions of Smith, Russo and Melnyk. When Smith’s live-in partner, Julia Wagner vanished at the outset of a Caribbean vacation with her husband Hank and his live-in partner, Francine Smith, widow of one of the FairHaven murder victims, investigators have limited jurisdiction to pursue three unresolved murders and an open missing persons file. The investigators have labelled their open case files, “The Country Club Murders.”
Bennett and Nelson have since become friends. Nelson has joined FairHaven Country Club as a golf member and the two have vowed to travel to Scotland to experience the old courses where the game was born. Their work schedules and a worldwide pandemic have put their plans on hold. Almost two years after the Country Club Murders unfolded, Bennett and Nelson are about to embark on their delayed golf vacation in Scotland.
In the ten ensuing days, their idyllic tour of Scotland and its ancient golf courses will end abruptly when they become overpowered by unseen forces and tragic events from the past.
