He settles in South Dakota, where he becomes a homesteader—a person who acquires and works on a piece of land under the Homestead Act.As Jean Baptiste builds his homestead and establishes himself in the community, he encounters various challenges and opportunities. The novel explores his relationships with other African-American homesteaders, as well as interactions with white settlers and Native Americans in the region.
