Excerpt from The Farmer in War-Time Another matter which comes into prominence at this time, when the importance of increased production is no apparent, is the prohibition of the importation of live cattle. Owing to the fear of the introduction of contagious diseases, all cattle arriving in this country have to be slaughtered at the port of arrival, and thus the home breeder of stock is in the enjoyment of an absolutely prowoted industry. It is very desirable to leave nothing undone to 11t our herds from disease, but it must be remembered tnat the effect of the means adopted has been to raise the price of store cattle to a figure which, until the very recent rise in price of fat stock, allowed the feeder no direct profit at all. The relaxation of the order prohibiting the importation of live cattle would have a very material efiect on the cost of producing meat, but only those in authority can tell whether this might not be attained at too great a risk. Anyhow, it behoves the British breeder not to waste the opportunity by breeding any but the best commercial stock.
