Later on the doors of the college were opened to members of the Hanlin Academy, but these supreme scholars of China scorned to sit at the feet of the west, and being supported by the president of the academy, who was also the Emperor's teacher, they hauohtily refused to become members of the college. Unable to seenie students from the higher literati, they had to be content with recruits of lower degree.
