Dante Alighieri's life and work were profoundly shaped by the political turbulence of Italy in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. To understand Dante's critiques and the depth of his political commentary, we must first examine the political landscape of Italy during his time. Italy was not a unified nation but a collection of independent city-states and regions constantly embroiled in internal strife, foreign intervention, and political instability. The conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines—the two major factions of the time—was at the heart of this disarray, and Dante's personal experiences were inextricably tied to these divisions.
