Going away to a slumber party alone is an absurd concept for a child. However, it is a very subtle and a gentle way for a parent to communicate the basic concepts of grief and transitions of life. Your child understands caterpillars, butterflies, and friendships. If a child ever losses a pet or a friend or an elderly relative; the memory of this simple story can aid a parent to console a child who suffers from loss. Reading the story to the child teaches and prepares for a future event that we as parents would prefer they never experience, but know happens all too often. Let them hear this story and love the conclusion and be fortified with its positive message.
