Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Engineering Such a plant has three essential elements: (1) The furnace, (2) the boiler, and (3) the engine. Fuel is fed into the furnace, here it is burned. A portion of the heat liberated from the fuel by combustion is absorbed by the water in the boiler, converting it into steam under pressure. The steam being admitted to the cylinder of the engine does work upon the piston and is then exhausted through a suitable pipe to the atmosphere. The process is a continuous one, fuel and water being fed into the furnace and the boiler in proportion to the power demanded.
