臺靜農是五四一代渡海來臺知識分子的代表性人物，兼具文人、學者、教育家、藝術家多重身份。他的一生幾乎跨越了整個二十世紀，走過文學革命、八年抗戰與兩岸分立，更在戰亂離散中見證了百年來社會的新舊過渡與文學轉型。本書精選臺靜農歷年來的文學書寫與學術論文，分為「詩作」、「小說」、「雜文」、「學術論文」四輯，勾勒他的文史研究與文學人生，凸顯其間的「史識」與「詩心」。另以「附編」完整呈現此前未曾結集出版的《「白沙讀史箚記」，兼及若干重要佚文與佚信，以期體現臺靜農其人其文的時代意義，並為日後的相關研究提供參考。
