Sheepherders of the Mountains: American West is an extensively researched history of the role of the sheepherders of the American West mountains, with an emphasis on the Basques, Native Americans, and New Mexican pastores. Author Conchita Sintas provides the techniques of sheepherding in addition to painting a vivid tableau of life as a herder: camping, weather and financial disasters, loneliness and accomplishments as well as folklore and the infamous cattlemen-versus-sheepmen wars. Of course, any major industry must contend with the government, as laws around grazing and forest reserves are created.
