That which is gifted can be taken back.
After an extended tropical vacation, Ava returns to work with coventry still on her wrist. Her new goal is to work an office job for Gerald and study hard to become a private detective. Their caseload remains the same, but now they're down a detective.
They have two new cases within a few hours of Ava's return to the office.
The first is from Bonnie, who has returned from halfway across the globe. She's lost what seems impossible to lose: the door glyph. Bonnie has been on the trail for weeks and come up with dead ends and a list of confused users all reporting the same loss and no explanation for the hole that burns away at their souls. Bonnie knows more than they do about the glyph, has tried everything she can think of and has nowhere else to turn.
The second case comes from the Umbra. Once set on the trail of door users and possessing it himself, their hound has been murdered in the early morning hours. What's worse is that the hound was transporting an artifact, a magical relic so powerful it's said to be capable of turning people to stone. They've tried absolutely nothing and are all out of ideas.
In the wake of the glyph vanishing, Ava is presented with unignorable evidence that points to an uncomfortable truth all the world will soon be forced to face.
The gods are interfering with mortal affairs. And they are not happy.
