Rupert Rollins is a hardworking New York clerk whose small wages help support his widowed mother and a sickly sister, but when business slows and he is dismissed, he is thrust into the fear and humiliation of unemployment. With rent looming and almost nothing in his pocket, he searches the city for work, only to find that hardship has touched every firm he visits. Yet amid poverty and uncertainty, Rupert's honesty, perseverance, and quiet faith begin to open unexpected doors. A chance act of kindness brings him into the orbit of Frank Sylvester, a wealthy but aimless young man whose generosity helps Rupert's family and whose example sharpens the novel's contrast between privilege and responsibility. Rupert later proves his courage by exposing a watch fraud, winning the friendship of Mr. Packard, and becoming entangled in old family suspicions, public accusations, and the dangers of appearances. As his fortunes rise, he faces a deeper test of character when he takes responsibility for little Fred Harvey, an orphaned boy left with a small inheritance. Through setbacks and blessings alike, Rupert's ambition becomes a story of moral growth, compassion, and the power of steadfast decency. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
