Book-Two in the “Retro Terrors” collection contains two classically inspired works from Stephen Glover under two of his various pseudonyms; both of them brooding and supernatural takes on the subject of gender warfare and the mesmeric, psychological and irrevocable, form that conflict can sometimes take.
“Ancient Sorceries Revisited”, from Sandrine Bessancort gives us the misadventure of an English civil-servant vacationing in France at the beginning of the 20th century. A timid and inoffensive bachelor who breaks his journey to visit a sleepy village in the Loire Valley… And finds himself unable to leave!
The second of our misadventures is Rafael Menton’s “A Woman of Haiti” and the tale of a logical and dismissive professor in the sciences who is brought face to face with a female mesmerist from the West Indies at a soiree thrown by a more credulous friend… As his relationship with his fiancé falls apart and the rest of his life is dismantled about him, it is safe to say that the dismissive professor soon finds himself undergoing a change of heart on the subject of both science and the occult.
2-Works of terror and possession from the past paying homage to the fiction of Blackwood and Conan Doyle.
