A broken locket. A hidden map. And magic, waiting to be unleashed... For eleven-year-old Marigold, every day in Cedar Grove Orphanage is dark and dreadful. First, there are Ms. Bellfur's shoes to shine. Then, there is sweeping. And then there are the rat traps to empty. All that remains of Marigold's parents is a secret locket she keeps hidden under her sweater. Nobody knows about it, except her best friend, Kai. Kai is kind - and he isn't afraid of rats. When an accident breaks open Marigold's locket, she discovers her parents left her a map and a mission: to bring magic back into the world. But restoring the mythical Elemental Stone means crossing the Forbidden Unknown...and that's if they can escape Ms. Bellfur and Cedar Grove first.
