Since proverbial metaphors are verbal images, it is no surprise that artists translate these images into various art forms, including woodcuts, misericordes, engravings, emblems, paintings, caricatures, cartoons, comic strips, posters, and graffiti. This international and annotated bibliography contains 378 entries that summarize the impressive scholarship on the interrelationship of iconography and paremiology. The studies range from such wellknown artists as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, and Francisco de Goya to the popular art of T-shirts, banners, flags, figurines, and graffiti.
