Essentializes the chaotic brilliance of an artist who distorts and reconstructs contemporary painting with irreverent wit and electric color.
Pow Martinez’s paintings are at once riotous and enigmatic: boldly colored and teetering between beauty and absurdity. His work pulls from the raw energy of underground comics and the anxieties of modern life, all rendered in his signature expressive style. In this first comprehensive monograph on Martinez, renowned art writer Tony Godfrey tracks the evolution of the artist’s practice from 2009 to 2023, providing a rich background on his influences and restless experimentation.
Structured around intimate conversations with the artist, Pow Martinez examines his shifting visual language, from grotesque figures and chaotic compositions to recent explorations of cinema and surreal storytelling. Godfrey’s lively writing brings Martinez’s world to life, capturing the artist’s wit and sheer love of image-making. Featuring a selection of full-color reproductions, this superbly produced volume is both a celebration of Martinez’s work and an essential document of one of the most distinctive voices in Filipino contemporary art.
