First published in 1984, Place and Time with Children Five to Nine challenges the conventional curriculum in arguing that too much emphasis has been placed on the basics, language, and number skills, to the exclusion of other aspects of the curriculum. While teachers recognise that young children must be introduced to the past, recent and distant, and the environment, near and far, these are often topics selected at random. This book puts the case for an approach that gives serious thought to the ways in which the Humanities might be integrated into a highly structured primary curriculum. Exploring theoretical and practical aspects of such curriculum planning, Place and Time with Children Five to Nine will establish itself as an invaluable text for teachers and trainers alike.
