In 1832 he became joint-editor with Schwab of the Musenalmanach, and continued it with excellent results till his death. His influence was felt by the younger generation like Simrock, Wackernagel, Gaudy, and F teilig' rath. In 1835 he was chosen a member of the Academy of Sciences at Berlin. In this year he lost his wife, - a severe blow to the poet, who had to redouble his labors in order to forget his grief. His failing health forced him, in the latter part of 1837, to resign his position at the Botanical Gardens, and in 1838 he was retired on full pay.
