What happens when a pair of newly-licensed private investigators set up shop in one of rural Canada's sleepiest communities?

Jim Shephard's debut novel is set in the fictional coastal town of Misty Harbour, Prince Edward Island, where lifelong friends, Ben Broder and Vern Peters embark on an adventure far removed from the security and boredom they previously enjoyed while running Peters' Tavern and Banquet Centre.

The pair's first real case involves Clarence Butterworth, a sanctimonious American client who arrives unannounced with a chip on his shoulder and a secret that he intends to preserve at all costs. Lies and misrepresentations accumulate in an effort to keep the fledgling investigators from discovering the true reason for his appearance. All the while, Ben and Vern are being stalked by a psychotic predator.
