Dr. Azzam S. Kanaan was a beloved and highly respected neurologist in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was also a lover of history and a proud son of Nablus, Palestine. He wanted to help his descendants understand the history of their land and people, so he began writing a book about it. After thirteen years, he had nearly completed it when he passed away. His widow, Shadia, worked with an editor for three years to prepare the book for publication.
This book traces the various civilizations that influenced the land, religions, and social systems of Palestine over the ages. The first part discusses the history of Palestine from the Stone Age through the Iron Age, touching on the history of Mesopotamia and Arabia as well. The second part of the book details the development of the religions of Palestine, including Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The last section of the book covers Palestine in the modern era, from the rule of the Ottoman Empire to the British occupation to the Nakba.
Working from a reference library of hundreds of books, Dr. Kanaan was able to provide a far-reaching, even-handed review of this vast span of history, placing his birthplace and culture--and his own life--in the context of the religions, civilizations, and political forces that shaped the country of Palestine and continue to shape it today.
