Burton presents biographical sketches of women from diverse backgrounds, including royalty, reformers, educators, and missionaries, who defied traditional gender roles and made their mark in various fields such as politics, education, and religion. She sheds light on the often-overlooked stories of women who were instrumental in advancing causes such as women's education, social reform, and the fight for women's rights in China.Among the figures discussed are Empress Dowager Cixi, who wielded considerable power behind the throne during a critical period of Chinese history, and reformers like Kang Youwei’s daughters, who advocated for women’s education and sought to improve conditions for women. Burton also emphasizes the efforts of Christian missionaries and converts who played a key role in expanding educational opportunities for women in China.
