When a body turns up in her rare books nook, a disgraced journalist discovers her sanctuary has been hiding deadly secrets all along.
Violet Hayes fled Chicago after one mistake destroyed her investigative journalism career. Three years later, she's found peace running Chapter & Verse, a cozy bookshop in charming Pinehaven, Wisconsin—until she discovers philanthropist Alistair Finch dead among her mysteries, staged with chilling symbolism.
The sheriff calls it an accident. Violet knows better.
Hidden in a hollowed-out Gatsby, she finds a ledger documenting decades of predatory loans that have trapped half the town—including the sheriff himself. Worse, her bookshop has been Alistair's secret headquarters for years, making her the perfect unwitting accomplice.
As threatening texts escalate and buildings mysteriously collapse, Violet realizes the killer is still hunting. Everyone has motive: the widow facing disinheritance, the architect forced to approve deadly designs, the mayor drowning in campaign debt, even the loyal assistant with family secrets buried deep.
But the deadliest secret is this: Alistair's death wasn't the end of Pinehaven's nightmare—it was just the beginning. And someone will do anything to keep Violet from exposing the truth... including making her the next victim.
