Reclaiming the stories of women who built early Methodism.
From Methodism's earliest days, women were essential to the movement's growth and vitality, yet their stories have too often been forgotten or marginalized. Mothers in Israel recovers the remarkable legacy of eighteenth-century Methodist women who served as class leaders, preachers, devotional writers, teachers, and pastoral caregivers, earning the biblical designation "Mothers in Israel," a designation that harkens back to the biblical Deborah, for their courageous faith and exemplary leadership.
The author brings to light the lives and ministries of pioneering women, including Susanna Annesley Wesley, Sarah Ryan, Mary Bosanquet Fletcher, Frances Mortimer Pawson, Sarah Crosby, and others who shaped early Methodism. Drawing on careful historical research and the women's own theological writings, this book moves beyond mere biography to explore the spiritual qualities that sustained these leaders through significant obstacles and opposition.
What compelled these intelligent, faithful women to stand firm in their callings? How did their theology provide a foundation for ministry? And what roles did the men in their lives play in either supporting or hindering their work? Through these compelling narratives, you'll discover a rich spiritual legacy that continues to inspire and challenge the Church today.
