કોઈ અઢી હજાર વર્ષ પહેલાં યૂનાનમાં એક ગુલાહ હતો, ઈસપ. તેણે દાસ-પ્રથાના જુલ્મ અને અત્યાચાર જોયા, તો એનું હૃદય ફૂટી-ફૂટીને રોઈ પડ્યું. એના અનુભવ અનોખી વાર્તાઓના ચહેરામાં ઢાળવામાં આવ્યા. ઈસપ ગલી-ગલી ફરીને બાળકોને આ વાર્તાઓ સંભળાવતો. તે જ્યાં પણ જતો, બાળકો વાર્તાવાળા બાબા ઈસપને ઘેરી લેતા અને વાર્તા સંભળાવવાની ઇચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરતા. જોતાં-જોતાં જ આ આખી દુનિયામાં જઈ પહોંચી. હિન્દીના પ્રસિદ્ધ સાહિત્યકાર પ્રકાશ મનુએ ઈસપની ઘણી બધી વાર્તાઓને એક નવા અને સુંદર રૂપમાં રજૂ કરી છે. તેમણે એટલી સુંદર અને ભાવપૂર્ણ ભાષામાં આ વાર્તાઓને લખી છે કે, બાળકો-મોટાઓ બધા એને મનપૂર્વક વાંચશે.
