Miss Amanda and the One Room School offers an illustrated glimpse of the education system in the 1930's rural segregated south. This story reveals the resilience, the challenges, and the love that existed within the community during a time where resources were few, and education was limited.
The people and events in this book are real.
Amanda Anderson Grace began her teaching career at the age of nineteen in 1936. She would have to fill many roles in addition to being the teacher of several grades in one room. Nevertheless, she was undeterred by the challenges of the time.
She remained consistent and dedicated to the school and the community she loved.
This book is appropriate for all ages as it takes readers back to a time long ago yet very present in the minds of the people who lived through it.
