First and foremost, personal prophecy must be placed in its proper context. Personal prophecy is supposed to supplement and confirm God's written Word in our lives, rather than to replace it. All personal prophecy is subject to God's Word, which means that God will not speak to you in a way that contradicts the scriptural truths found in His written Word. One of the ways we hear from the Lord is through personal prophecy, but it is far from the only way. I've encountered folks who place a larger emphasis on personal prophecy than on everything else as if everything they do requires a prophetic word. While some feel that personal prophecy is only used to confirm what God has shown us personally and is not meant to reveal anything new about God's will in our lives, others claim that God no longer speaks through personal prophecy. Remember that God's Word says that we should "want to prophecy" and "should not reject prophesying" (1 Corinthians 12:39, 14:1,39; 1 Thessalonians 5:20). In my perspective, one of the most important responsibilities of personal prophecy is to affirm what the Lord has previously stated to us personally. Because many people have difficulty hearing God clearly, He will communicate with us through personal prophecy and disclose His desires to us. As proven by several scriptural occurrences in both the Old and Fresh Testaments, God does reveal new things to us about His intentions for our life through personal prophecy. God revealed a calling and a plan for Paul's life that he had not previously known about, as the Apostle Paul exemplifies. Regardless of whether or not stipulations are expressed, we must acknowledge that personal prophecy is conditional.
