When a certain Mark Anthony of the famous Italian family of the Roveres arrived in Agen, in SW France, in the second decade of the 16th century, he brought along with him his personal physician, Master Julius Caesar, who had been under the protection of his family for some time. This latter was a majestic-looking man of some 40 years of age who was to become renowned as one of the greatest scholars of the Renaissance. Indeed, so great became his fame in all branches of learning that it was for long considered that he was the greatest scholar who had ever dwelt in France.
