Excerpt from Letter on the Richmond Party Those who entertained the suspicion, used no ceremony in pro claiming it; so that both through his friends and his foes, he was soon apprised of the fact, that his motives were impeached and his sincerity was questioned. Thus informed, be resolved to put down immediately, if possible, suspicions so injurious to his poli t1cal standing, and to the cause he advocated; and, ' therefore, in language. The most pointed and nervous, such as might well be come a disinterested politician, influenced by the purest motives, Mr. Randolph made and repeated, on the floor of the Convention, the most solemn decla1 ations, that, in advocating the adoption of the Constitution, he was very far from being influenced by ambi tious motives. That, on the contrary, he desired not preferment; but wished, above all things, the enjoy ment and the happiness of a private station.
