Powerful, funny, moving and personal, Lake of the Prairies is a richly layered exploration of the elemental childhood question: where do I come from?
Meadow Lake, Warren Cariou’s home in the boreal Saskatchewan landscape of rock, water and muskeg, is home to two historical traditions—Native and settler. In Cariou’s boyhood imagination, tales of hardworking homesteaders lived alongside Native legends. As an adult Warren Cariou has been forced to confront Meadow Lake’s culture of racism and the secrets his family had kept hidden for generations, secrets that would alter forever Warren’s sense of identity and belonging in Meadow Lake.
