Laboulaye's Fairy Book gathers richly illustrated fairy tales from across Europe, introduced by Kate Douglas Wiggin as a cherished companion of childhood and a lasting source of wonder for readers of every age. Wiggin praises Laboulaye's warm, intimate storytelling, shaped by family memory and alive with wit, imagination, and moral insight. The collection ranges from Breton castles and giant-haunted islands to enchanted forests where the seasons obey mysterious powers. In "Yvon and Finette," a fearless Breton youth and a clever fairy-begotten captive join forces against a giant, using cunning, magical aid, and mutual courage to survive impossible tasks, escape by sea, and outwit pursuit. Their tale balances Yvon's boldness with Finette's intelligence, showing how wit can triumph over brute force. "The Twelve Months" offers a different kind of magic: Dobrunka, a gentle stepdaughter abused by her family, receives spring violets, summer strawberries, and autumn apples from the personified Months in the midst of winter, while greed and pride bring ruin to her cruel relations. Across these stories, fortune, humility, loyalty, and kindness prove stronger than selfishness and fear. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
