Excerpt from Julian the Apostate and the Duke of Mercia: Historical Dramas The Liberty of the Press, and the Basis of Power, rose out of contemporary events; and his especial attachment to the country of his birth, for the religious freedom of which he had early contended, and with the honour and interests of which he deemed those of the British Empire to be inseparably entwined, found an expression in his Lamentation of Ireland Julian the Apostate was published in 1822, and dedicated to the Earl of Limerick, brother of his mother, to whom he was profoundly attached, and who had resided with him during the years of her widow hood. In 1823 the Duke of Mercia appeared, a drama, the form of which was suggested by the old Chronicle Plays.
