Jinny is an independent and capable woman, running her family's carrying business after her father's death. Set in a close-knit rural community, the story revolves around her daily life, the changing social landscape, and her interactions with the villagers. Despite her practical nature and self-sufficiency, Jinny finds herself navigating complex emotions, particularly when she becomes entangled in a romantic relationship with a man named Will Flynt. As Jinny struggles with her feelings for Will and her desire to maintain her independence, the novel explores themes of love, tradition, and modernity. The novel is filled with a rich depiction of rural life in England at a time when such ways of living were beginning to change, reflecting the tensions between progress and tradition. Zangwill contrasts Jinny's modest but stable life with the changes happening around her, both socially and economically.
